Football Event Glossary

A restart awarded to the defending team when the ball crosses their goal line (not resulting in a goal) and was last touched by an opponent. The ball is placed in the goal area and must leave the penalty box before it is considered in play.

A method of restarting play when the ball fully crosses the sideline. The opposing team of the player who last touched the ball is awarded the throw. The throw must be delivered from behind the head with both feet on the ground.

A set-piece awarded to the attacking team when the ball crosses the defending team's goal line (not resulting in a goal) and was last touched by a defender. Taken from the corner arc nearest to where the ball exited.

A restart awarded after a foul or infraction.

A direct free shot from the penalty spot awarded when a foul occurs inside the defending team's penalty area. Only the goalkeeper may attempt to stop the shot.

A player is in an offside position if they are nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender at the moment the ball is played to them — and they gain an advantage or interfere with play.

A caution given by the referee for misconduct, repeated fouls, time-wasting, or unsporting behavior. A second yellow card results in a red card and ejection from the match.

A dismissal resulting from a second yellow card, leading to a red card and automatic ejection from the game.

A disciplinary sanction resulting in a player's immediate ejection from the match. Issued for serious foul play, violent conduct, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, or receiving a second yellow card.
